HUNTAKH, Syria – Syrian President Bashar al-Assad took control of the northern Syrian town of Hit in the northern Homs countryside, Syria state news agency SANA reported on Friday.

Roadworks see ancient tree chopped down in front of City Hall
The wood appeared to have been sliced by a saw at about 6:30 a.m. Friday in front of the City Hall, with a worker’s cut saw on the other side.
An unidentified woman and child were on the same side of the tree as the worker, a worker with the city’s city-run trees department said Monday afternoon.
A woman who saw the saw said they were about a foot wide and 10 feet in height and „about 30 years old“ with a green trunk. She declined to give her name or identification.
She said she was on the street and had walked into the neighborhood about a half-block from the City Hall site to see her two children when she noticed a white truck driving by.
When she saw the truck and then saw what looked like the workers digging, she went to check it out. She said the woman who saw it drove away from the scene after hearing the commotion from the tree.
It’s not known when the worker saw what was cut in the tree, and it could have been days, the worker’s mother said.
